Sandalwood: a scent of the Orient
Sandalwood plant
An evergreen plant, sandalwood is six to nine meters tall and grows in rocky, sunny places. Its fragrant wood is used, in addition to extracting essential oil, also for the production of carved objects and incense sticks.
The Sandalwood tree is a small tropical plant of the Santalaceae family native to southern India, eastern Indonesia, and northern Australia, but currently grows in tropical and subtropical forests of different countries, with a humid and rainy climate. Only after thirty years of life is the tree felled to use its wood.

On the Isle of Pines, the indigenous people work sandalwood by hand, almost exclusively with hand tools, which is why its availability is very rare and expensive.
