The Magnificent 7: The Truly Indispensable Essential Oils - Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus, the king of breathing
Fresh, strong, and balsamic, Eucalyptus is extracted from its grayish-green leaves and the ends of its twigs. Extremely beneficial for the respiratory system, this essential oil contains an active ingredient called 1,8-cineole, which gives it mucolytic and expectorant, antitussive, and balsamic properties. Both Eucalyptus and the cineole extracted from it are frequently used in hygiene products and anti-rheumatic remedies.
The surprising properties of this plant were discovered by Western colonists thanks to the knowledge of Australian aboriginals, who used its leaves to prepare compounds to treat wounds and combat fever, dysentery, respiratory problems, and other infectious diseases. The name Eucalyptus, however, has a Greek etymology: eu (well) kaliptòs (hidden). This refers to the flowers, whose petals long conceal the stamens, forming a kind of cup around them.
There are over 700 species of this plant, and essential oil can be extracted from about a hundred of them through steam distillation. Large Eucalyptus trees are evergreens that can reach one hundred meters in height. We will specifically discuss Eucalyptus Globulus, the most common and widely used species.
Physical properties
* Respiratory, balsamic, expectorant, and antitussive for external applications, from chest massage (diluted) to aromatic baths, from room diffusion to inhalations;
* Antipyretic, in cold-related illnesses it is extremely effective, even when massaged or rubbed (diluted) on the sole of the foot;
* Anti-inflammatory and healing, useful in treating small skin lesions such as burns, wounds, or herpes;
* Antiparasitic and insect repellent;
* Antirheumatic, often used in liniments for joint pain;
* Analgesic, it is an excellent remedy to use in diffusion for headaches;
* Anti-dandruff, when diluted in shampoo, it counteracts seborrhea and rebalances the scalp;
* Deodorant, thanks to its fresh aroma and antimicrobial action, it is suitable for body cleansing and care;
* Actively cleanses environments, purifying the air and preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
