    Antiviral Essential Oils

Antiviral and antibacterial essential oils are essential oils that originate from plants corresponding to more active chemotypes to fight bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. This category includes Tea Tree, Thyme, Cloves, Cinnamon, and Lemon. These activities are enabled by phenols, terpenes, eugenol, and limonene.

    Natural Antibacterial

Antibacterial refers to a compound that inhibits the replication of bacteria or kills both gram+ and gram- by interfering with their cell membrane.

Lemon through terpenes (pinene, myrcene, limonene).

Tea Tree oil is a strong bactericide for a wide range of bacteria and at lower concentrations is bacteriostatic; it also acts on various antibiotic-resistant strains, and even terpin-4-ol (the main constituent) has a stronger anti-staphylococcal action than some antibiotics. Thyme through thymol and carvacrol.

Cloves are particularly interesting against antibiotic-resistant strains. Cinnamon is particularly interesting for its action on biofilm-forming bacteria that usually infest surfaces.

    Natural Antiviral

Antiviral action is expressed in many different ways, for example by inhibiting the virus from attaching to target cells while it is still free, preventing its replication, etc. Lemon, even at very low concentrations, inhibits the replication of herpes simplex, and tea tree at even lower concentrations. Cloves exhibit antiviral activity through eugenol, which acts on the virus's DNA polymerase, tested on herpes and hepatitis C.

    Natural Antifungal

Compounds that kill fungi usually directly by destroying their cell membrane or inhibiting their proliferation. Lemon through limonene. Cloves through eugenol on filamentous fungi, yeasts, and human pathogens.

    Tea Tree Essential Oil

    Melaleuca Alternifolia.

Among antiviral essential oils, Tea Tree is in first position. A medium-sized tree typical of New South Wales, Australia. The common name "Tea Tree" derives from a "mistake" by Captain James Cook: when he landed in Australia, he was offered an aromatic drink made from Melaleuca leaves and he believed it was tea. Aborigines used to use flowers and leaves in infusion as a remedy for coughs, headaches, lesions, and wounds, and thus Tea Tree was appreciated immediately by the first European settlers.tea tree
